Turn your own car into a self-driving car with Comma One

  • by

Comma.ai which is run by George Hotz is an interesting story. There were more news releases today about their Comma One product which they hope to release before the end of this year for $999 with a $24/month subscription. They haven’t released which cars this will work with, but they are saying it will be many of the current vehicles and can turn them into autonomous vehicles. I find it hard to imagine how they will do this without some expensive installation. I just don’t see how they will have their device take control of the steering, acceleration, and braking. I know the Cruise system only worked with specific Audi vehicles and it required installation (before they were bought by General Motors).

If Comma.ai is able to pull this off, then we may have far more autonomous vehicles very soon. I’m guessing it is much more likely these will be semi-autonomous, but with the rapidly improving technology, who knows what will see just one year from now. Depending on what the system can do, I may be tempted to give it a try. I’m not sure I could justify the cost unless it really does a much better job than what my Subaru Legacy can already do to maintain my safety.
